EN 14904 Standard Explained
EN 14904 is the European norm for indoor sports surfaces, widely adopted by FIVB, FIBA, and BWF as the de-facto global standard. The norm specifies measurable values for force reduction, vertical deformation, ball rebound, slip resistance, and shock absorption. Sub-floor Preparation Detail
Vinyl is unforgiving of sub-floor defects — every crack, bump, or moisture variation telegraphs through to the surface. Our standard sub-floor preparation includes:
- Moisture testing. Calcium chloride or RH probe test must show under 3 lb / 1000 sqft / 24 hr (or under 75 per cent RH). Higher moisture leads to adhesive failure and bubbling within months.
- Flatness correction. Self-levelling cement screed at Rs 30 to Rs 50 per sqft corrects any variation greater than 3 mm in 3 m.
- Crack repair. Existing slab cracks are routed and filled with flexible epoxy before screed.
- Vapour barrier. For ground-floor installations with no underslab waterproofing, a 200 micron polyethylene vapour barrier is applied before screed.
- Primer application. A water-based acrylic primer locks the screed surface and improves adhesive bond.
Seam Welding Technique
Vinyl sheets typically come in 1.8 m or 2 m widths, so an 18 x 9 m volleyball court has 4 to 5 longitudinal seams. The seam preparation is critical to the surface's monolithic feel:
- Sheets are laid with 5 to 10 mm overlap and allowed to relax for 24 hours.
- Both edges are cut simultaneously with a recessing tool to ensure perfect mating.
- The seam groove is routed to 75 per cent of sheet thickness.
- A welding cord matching the sheet colour is fed through a hot-air welder at 350 to 400 deg C.
- The cord melts into the groove and fuses both sheets into a single surface.
- After cooling, the cord is shaved flush with a quartersmoon plane.
Properly welded seams are invisible to players and waterproof — the court can be wet-mopped without seam liquid ingress.
Multi-sport Line System
The standard FIVB volleyball court can carry secondary lines for basketball (FIBA half or full court), badminton (1 or 2 doubles courts), and futsal (with reduced playing area). Lines are factory-printed in contrasting colours per FIBA and BWF guidance: yellow for badminton, blue for futsal, black or red for basketball. This multi-line approach lets a single 360 sqm hall serve four sports without surface change-over.
