Kabaddi Court Construction India

Kabaddi court construction in India: AKFI-standard guide

Pro Kabaddi League changed kabaddi from a village sport into a televised national obsession. State academies, district stadia, school PE departments and private clubs are all building AKFI-standard kabaddi courts at unprecedented pace. At ChampCourts, we install kabaddi mats, PU permanent courts and acrylic outdoor kabaddi surfaces - to AKFI dimensions, with full line marking, perimeter cushioning, and a 5-year warranty - pan-India.

This guide covers AKFI dimensions, the three surface options (EVA mats, PU permanent, acrylic outdoor), real project costs (Rs 3-8L for an EVA mat, Rs 8-15L for a PU permanent court), and how to choose between portable and permanent installations.

Why kabaddi infrastructure is booming

  • Pro Kabaddi League viewership. Season 10 (2024) reached 230M+ TV viewers - second only to cricket among Indian sports.
  • State-level recognition. Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra, Haryana, UP and Punjab have dedicated state kabaddi development programmes.
  • School curricula. AKFI-affiliated state federations push kabaddi into CBSE and state-board PE curricula.
  • Academy growth. Pro Kabaddi player-paths feed back into 200+ private academies across India.
  • Olympic ambitions. Asian Games inclusion (gold for India 7 of 7 times) keeps kabaddi in the national funding pipeline.
  • Affordable. A district-grade EVA mat costs Rs 3-5L - within reach of any school or society.

AKFI court dimensions

The Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India sets the standard. Dimensions vary by age and format:

  • Men's court: 13m length × 10m width
  • Women's and junior court: 12m length × 8m width
  • Sub-junior court: 11m length × 8m width
  • Mid-line: centre, divides the court into two equal halves
  • Baulk line: 3.75m from mid-line (parallel to mid-line)
  • Bonus line: 4.75m from mid-line (1m beyond baulk)
  • Lobby: 1m wide strip on each long side of the court
  • End line: at each short side, beyond which raiders cannot retreat

Including 1m perimeter run-off, total mat / surface area: 15m × 12m (180 sqm) for men's full spec.

The three surface options for kabaddi

1. EVA foam mats (portable, most popular)

40mm thick interlocking EVA closed-cell foam tiles, AKFI-approved, with printed/inlaid line markings. The standard for Pro Kabaddi League, district championships and academies. Portable - the mat unrolls in 90 minutes, packs back in 2 hours - making it ideal for venues that share floor space with basketball, badminton or events. Kabaddi court EVA mats.

2. PU permanent court (indoor, premium)

Seamless polyurethane poured-in-place, FIBA Class 3 elasticity tuned for kabaddi grip and slide control. Permanent installation, longest lifespan (10-15 years), highest premium feel. Right for state academies and dedicated kabaddi training centres. Kabaddi court PU permanent.

3. 8-layer acrylic on concrete (outdoor)

The classic outdoor multi-sport surface, with kabaddi line markings overlaid. Cost-effective for schools and rural academies where the court is exposed. Less cushion than mats or PU but durable and weather-stable.

Tournament hosting considerations

If your venue intends to host AKFI-sanctioned tournaments, additional infrastructure matters:

  • Mat selection. Must be Pro Kabaddi League standard (40mm EVA, AKFI-approved supplier).
  • Lighting. ≥500 lux for state-level, ≥750 lux for national-level competitive play.
  • Spectator seating. Minimum 200-500 seats for district, 1000+ for state.
  • Run-off zones. 2m around the court for player and referee movement.
  • Score display. Visible to all four sides.
  • Broadcast power and cable trays for streaming setups.
  • AKFI venue certification for hosting rights.

Construction process (PU permanent court, 20-25 days)

  1. Slab assessment and moisture check (day 0).
  2. Concrete grinding to ≤3mm/3m flatness (days 1-3).
  3. Epoxy primer (day 4).
  4. Self-levelling layer (day 5).
  5. PU shock pad pour, cure 24h (days 6-8).
  6. Reinforcement mesh (day 9).
  7. PU body coats, two passes (days 10-13).
  8. AKFI-spec line marking - mid line, baulk, bonus, lobby, end (days 14-16).
  9. PU top seal with matte finish for grip control (days 17-18).
  10. Cure, snag, handover (days 19-21).

EVA mat install (1-2 days)

  1. Floor cleaning and levelling check (day 0).
  2. Mat unrolling, alignment, interlocking (day 1, ~90 min for a single court).
  3. Line and lobby boundary verification.
  4. Mat tape secure around edges if used in a busy hall.
  5. Storage trolley + cover handover.

EVA mat vs PU permanent - decision logic

  • Choose EVA mat if: the hall is shared with other sports or events, you want to host away tournaments, your budget is < Rs 8 lakh, or you need flexible storage.
  • Choose PU permanent if: the venue is dedicated to kabaddi, you train 6-8 hours/day, you want the lowest per-year cost (Rs 70-100/sqft/year amortised), or the venue is an AKFI / SAI training centre.
  • Choose acrylic outdoor if: the court will live outdoors, budget is tight, and multi-sport line marking (kabaddi + basketball + volleyball) is acceptable.

Maintenance and longevity

  • EVA mat. Wipe clean after every session, deep-clean monthly with EVA-safe detergent. Inspect interlocks. Replace mat at year 5-8 depending on traffic.
  • PU permanent. Daily mop, weekly auto-scrubber, top-seal refresh at year 8-10.
  • Acrylic outdoor. Quarterly water wash, annual line repaint, recoat at year 4-6.

Frequently asked questions

What surface does Pro Kabaddi League use?

Pro Kabaddi uses 40mm EVA foam mats, AKFI-approved, in a portable interlocking format. Our EVA mat product matches this specification.

Can I install a kabaddi court on a basketball court?

Yes - this is exactly why EVA mats exist. Lay the mat over the basketball PU/hardwood floor for the kabaddi session, roll it up afterwards. The kabaddi mat does not damage the underlying surface.

Are men's and women's courts different sizes?

Yes. Men's: 13m × 10m. Women's and junior: 12m × 8m. Sub-junior: 11m × 8m. We supply mats in any of these sizes.

How heavy is an EVA kabaddi mat?

A 13m × 10m × 40mm mat weighs approximately 350-400 kg, supplied as 1m × 1m interlocking tiles for ease of handling and storage.

Can kabaddi be played outdoors?

Traditionally yes - on prepared mud surfaces. Modern AKFI tournaments are mat-based. For outdoor recreational play we install acrylic kabaddi courts; for tournament play indoors with mats.

What is the lifespan of an EVA mat?

5-8 years for a single academy with 6-8 hours of daily use. 8-10 years for school/society use of 2-3 hours/day.

Can kabaddi mats be transported between venues?

Yes. The mat divides into 1m × 1m interlocking tiles for transport. A standard 13m × 10m mat fits on a single Tata Ace tempo. Setup time at a new venue is 60-90 minutes.

What is the difference between Pro Kabaddi mat and a generic mat?

Pro Kabaddi League uses 40mm AKFI-approved high-density EVA in specific brand colours (red lobby, green court, white lines) with inlaid line markings (not painted). Generic mats are often 25-30mm thinner foam with painted lines that wear off in 6-12 months. The price gap is roughly 2x but the lifespan and tournament eligibility are very different.

Are the line colours standardised?

Yes. AKFI specifies green main court, red lobby strips, white lines (mid line, baulk line, bonus line) and yellow end lines. Sub-junior and women's mats follow the same colour code with smaller dimensions.

Mat construction in detail

An AKFI-approved Pro Kabaddi-spec EVA mat is not commodity foam. The build-up:

  • 40mm closed-cell EVA foam core. Density 60-80 kg/m³ - dense enough to support the impact of a full-grown raider's tackle, soft enough to cushion landings. Closed-cell structure prevents water and sweat absorption.
  • Interlocking edge profile. Tiles are 1m × 1m with puzzle-piece interlocks. A 13m × 10m mat consists of 130 tiles. Edge perimeter is straight-cut bevelled.
  • Top wear layer. Patterned high-friction texture for grip. Anti-slip even when wet from athlete sweat.
  • Inlaid line markings. Lines are cut from contrasting EVA and bonded into the mat at manufacture, not painted on top. This is what gives a true Pro Kabaddi mat its 5-8 year life - painted lines wear off in months.
  • Lobby strips. The 1m lobby on each side is a different colour (red) for instant visual demarcation.

Mat storage and handling

EVA mats are durable but they reward proper handling:

  • Roll up tile rows into 6-tile rolls; do not fold across the puzzle interlocks
  • Store rolls vertically on a wheeled trolley
  • Cover with breathable canvas - not plastic (traps moisture)
  • Store away from direct sunlight to prevent UV degradation
  • Avoid placing heavy items on top of stored rolls (causes permanent compression)
  • For long-term storage (more than 3 months), partially unroll and let the foam relax periodically
  • Transport in a covered vehicle - light rain and dust during transit is fine; sustained wet exposure shortens life

Storage trolley and accessories

We supply optional storage accessories that turn the mat into a true portable tournament kit:

  • Wheeled storage trolley. Powder-coated steel frame, 6-roll capacity, lockable. Rs 25,000-40,000.
  • Mat protective cover. Breathable canvas with handles, individual roll covers. Rs 5,000-10,000.
  • Set-up tools. Tile alignment guides, edge tape, locking pegs. Rs 3,000-5,000.
  • Carrying handles. Heavy-duty handles bonded to corner tiles for two-person carry. Rs 4,000-6,000.
  • AKFI line-marking template. For coaches to lay lines accurately at new venues. Rs 2,000-3,000.

PU permanent court - when to choose it

A permanent PU court is the right answer when:

  • Kabaddi is the primary or only sport in the hall
  • Training hours exceed 6 per day, 6 days per week
  • Hosting state-level or national-level events with broadcast requirements
  • You want the lowest per-year cost over 15-year horizon (PU amortises lower than mat replacement cycles)
  • The venue is a SAI / state DSO training centre

PU specification for kabaddi differs slightly from basketball - we tune the top coat for slightly higher friction (raiders need controlled grip for direction changes; defenders need grip during tackles). Line marking follows AKFI spec exactly with painted-in finish lines that match the surface 2K PU finish for long life.

Acrylic outdoor - the school workhorse

Acrylic outdoor kabaddi courts are common in rural and semi-urban schools, district sports complexes and grassroots academies. The build is identical to our standard 8-layer acrylic basketball court (Rs 65 acrylic + Rs 90 PCC base = Rs 155/sqft) with AKFI line marking laid out in white acrylic line paint.

The trade-off vs mats: lower cushion, harder landings, no portability. The trade-off vs PU: significantly lower cost, weather-stable, 4-6 year lifespan. For schools running 1-2 PE sessions per week, acrylic outdoor is a perfectly adequate spec.

Construction process - acrylic outdoor kabaddi (10-14 days)

  1. Site clearance and concrete slab assessment (day 1).
  2. Concrete repairs and crack treatment (days 2-3).
  3. Acid wash and surface preparation (day 4).
  4. Primer coat (day 5).
  5. Resurfacer layers for flatness (days 6-7).
  6. Cushion / acrylic body coats - 4 coats (days 8-10).
  7. AKFI line marking - mid, baulk, bonus, lobby, end (days 11-12).
  8. Top coat and final sealing (day 13).
  9. Snag and handover (day 14).

Pro Kabaddi League impact - the cultural shift

Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) has changed the economics of kabaddi infrastructure in three ways:

  • Visibility. Star players (Pardeep Narwal, Pawan Sehrawat, Maninder Singh) are household names. Kids enroll in academies citing their idols. Demand for academy infrastructure follows.
  • Sponsorship. Corporate CSR projects target sports infrastructure in PKL home states - Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, UP, Punjab, Telangana.
  • Standards. AKFI mat spec is now widely understood. Schools insist on Pro Kabaddi spec mats instead of generic foam.
