Sports court dimensions & sizes in India (metric + feet)

|Mukesh Jajodia, Founder

Looking for the standard size of a sports court in India? The official, governing-body court dimensions are: badminton 13.4 x 6.1 m (44 x 20 ft, doubles), pickleball 13.41 x 6.10 m (44 x 20 ft), tennis 23.77 x 8.23 m / 10.97 m (78 x 27 / 36 ft), basketball 28 x 15 m (FIBA), volleyball 18 x 9 m, futsal 40 x 20 m, box cricket roughly 24-37 x 12-18 m (80-120 x 40-60 ft, no fixed standard), squash 9.75 x 6.40 m and padel 20 x 10 m. The single master table below gives every sport in both metric and feet alongside the body that sets the rule, and each section links to the full dimension guide for that court. Use this page as the one place to plan the footprint of any court you are about to build.

This is the master reference. Every court size on it is the competition standard published by the relevant world federation, so you can size a room, mark a slab or brief a contractor with confidence. Recreational and junior courts are often smaller, but if you build to the figures here you will have a facility that meets official play. When you have picked your sport, follow the link to its detailed page for the line markings, run-off margins, net or wall heights and the India-specific build notes.

Master table: every sports court dimension (India)

All figures are the standard full-size playing area set by each sport's governing body. Feet values are rounded to the nearest practical building figure. "Court area" excludes the surrounding safety run-off, which you must add on top when planning the room or plot.

Badminton court dimensions

A full badminton court measures 13.4 m long by 6.1 m wide (44 x 20 ft) for doubles, set by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The singles court uses the same length but a narrower 5.18 m (17 ft) width because the outer side tramlines are out of play. The net sits 1.55 m high at the posts. Badminton is one of India's most-built indoor courts, and the compact footprint makes it ideal for schools, clubs and home halls. For line markings, the short-service line, doubles long-service line and the full India build spec, read the complete badminton court dimensions guide.

Pickleball court dimensions

A pickleball court is 13.41 m by 6.10 m (44 x 20 ft), the same outer footprint as a doubles badminton court, which is why so many Indian venues convert between the two. The standard comes from USA Pickleball and the International Federation of Pickleball (IFP). The defining feature is the 2.13 m (7 ft) non-volley zone, the "kitchen", either side of the net, which is set at 0.86 m high at the centre. Pickleball is the fastest-growing racquet sport in India, and a single badminton-sized slab can host it cheaply. Get the kitchen lines, net height and surfacing detail in the full pickleball court dimensions guide.

Tennis court dimensions

A tennis court is 23.77 m long (78 ft) for every match, with the width changing by format: 8.23 m (27 ft) for singles and 10.97 m (36 ft) for doubles, as defined by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The net is 0.914 m high at the centre. Crucially, the playing lines are only part of the job: the ITF recommends a total enclosed area of about 36.6 x 18.3 m so players have room to chase wide balls behind and beside the court. That run-off is the number that decides your plot size, not the lines themselves. Full markings, service boxes and India surfacing options are in the tennis court dimensions guide.

Basketball court dimensions

An international basketball court is 28 m long by 15 m wide (about 92 x 49 ft) under FIBA rules, the standard used for Indian competition and most new builds. The NBA court is slightly larger at 28.65 x 15.24 m, so always confirm which standard you are marking to before you paint lines. The basket rim is 3.05 m (10 ft) above the floor, and the three-point arc sits 6.75 m from the basket under FIBA. A full court needs generous side and end clearance for safe play. For the key, the restricted area, the markings and the acrylic-vs-PU surface choice, see the basketball court measurement guide.

Volleyball court dimensions

A volleyball court is 18 m long by 9 m wide (59 x 30 ft), set by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), with a 3 m attack line either side of the centre. The net height differs by gender: 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women. FIVB also requires a free zone of at least 3 m on all sides (5 m for top international events), so the room you build must be considerably larger than the court itself. Indian volleyball is played both indoors and on outdoor hard courts. The net heights, attack lines and surfacing are covered in the volleyball court dimensions guide.

Futsal court dimensions

A futsal court ranges from 25-42 m long and 16-25 m wide, with the standard competition size at 40 x 20 m (131 x 66 ft) under FIFA's futsal laws. Unlike outdoor football, futsal has fixed, relatively compact dimensions designed for a fast five-a-side indoor game on a hard, low-bounce surface. The goals are 3 m wide by 2 m high and the penalty mark sits 6 m out. Futsal is booming across Indian metros as an indoor turf or hard-court format. For the markings, goal area arc and the turf-vs-hard-court decision, read the futsal court dimensions guide.

Box cricket court dimensions

Box cricket has no single official size; it is a netted, indoor or rooftop format that is built to fit the available space, typically 24-37 m long by 12-18 m wide (roughly 80-120 x 40-60 ft). There is no global governing body, so dimensions vary widely between a compact rooftop cage and a large commercial turf arena. The pitch in the middle is usually a 18-20 m strip, and the surrounding nets keep the ball in play, which is what makes the format so space-efficient for Indian cities. Because the size is flexible, planning is about maximising your plot. See typical layouts and turf choices in the box cricket court dimensions guide.

Squash court dimensions

A singles squash court is 9.75 m long by 6.40 m wide (32 x 21 ft), a fully enclosed four-walled room set by the World Squash Federation. The front wall carries three lines: the tin at 0.48 m, the service line at 1.78 m and the out line at 4.57 m. Squash is unique among these sports because the walls are part of the playing area, so the room must be built to exact tolerances with a clear height of at least 5.64 m. This is a precision construction job. The wall markings, plaster spec and India build notes are in the squash court dimensions guide.

Padel court dimensions

A padel court is 20 m long by 10 m wide (66 x 33 ft), an enclosed court bounded by glass and mesh walls, as set by the International Padel Federation (FIP). The net divides it into two 10 x 10 m halves and stands 0.88 m high at the centre. Padel plays off the glass back and side walls, so the surrounding structure is integral, not just a fence. It is the newest racquet sport to arrive in India and demand for courts is rising fast in premium clubs. For the glass-wall spec, service boxes and turf surface, read the padel court dimensions guide.

How to use these dimensions when planning a court

Two rules save most first-time builders from an expensive mistake. First, always add the safety run-off to the court size before you size the room or plot: tennis, volleyball and basketball in particular need metres of clearance around the lines, and that clearance, not the court itself, sets your total area. Second, confirm the standard before you mark a single line, because some sports differ by format (tennis singles vs doubles, basketball FIBA vs NBA) or by gender (volleyball net height). Build to the governing-body figures in the table above and your court will meet official play.

Surface comes next. The same dimensions can sit on very different floors depending on the sport, your budget and indoor-versus-outdoor use. Our which-surface guide walks through acrylic, PU, synthetic turf, wooden and interlocking-tile options and matches each to the right court.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a sports court in India?

There is no single size because it depends on the sport. India follows the international governing-body standards: badminton is 13.4 x 6.1 m, basketball is 28 x 15 m (FIBA), tennis is 23.77 x 8.23/10.97 m, volleyball is 18 x 9 m, futsal is 40 x 20 m, squash is 9.75 x 6.40 m and padel is 20 x 10 m. Build to these figures and your court meets official competition play.

Are badminton and pickleball courts the same size?

The outer footprint is effectively identical at 44 x 20 ft (about 13.4 x 6.1 m), which is why Indian venues so often convert a doubles badminton court into a pickleball court. The internal markings differ: pickleball adds the 7 ft non-volley "kitchen" zone and uses a lower net, so the lines are repainted even though the slab is the same.

What size court needs the most space to build?

Among common Indian courts, a full doubles tennis court needs the largest total area once run-off is included, around 36.6 x 18.3 m for the enclosed playing space. Futsal at 40 x 20 m and basketball at 28 x 15 m also need large rooms. Always add the safety margin around the lines, because the court dimension alone understates the plot or hall you actually need.

Do these dimensions include the run-off or safety margin?

No. Every size in the master table is the playing area inside the lines only. You must add the run-off separately, and it varies by sport: tennis and volleyball need several metres of clearance on all sides, while squash and padel are enclosed by walls. Size your room or plot to the court plus its run-off, not the court alone.

Does box cricket have an official court size?

No. Box cricket has no world governing body and no fixed standard, so courts are built to suit the available space, commonly 80-120 ft long by 40-60 ft wide. The surrounding nets keep the ball in play, which lets the format fit rooftops and tight urban plots that could never hold a full cricket ground.

Where can I get the exact markings for each court?

Each sport in the table links to its own detailed dimension guide, which gives the full line markings, net or wall heights, run-off margins and India-specific build notes. Start from the master table above and follow the link for the court you are planning.
