Pickleball Court Dimensions: Size in Feet, Layout & Net Height (India)

|Mukesh Jajodia, Founder

A standard pickleball court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long (6.10 m x 13.41 m) - the same size for both singles and doubles. The net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre, and a 7-foot non-volley zone (the "kitchen") sits on each side of the net. Allow a total playing area of about 30 x 60 feet for safe run-off. These are the USA Pickleball official court dimensions, used worldwide and recognised by the International Federation of Pickleball.

Official pickleball court dimensions and measurements

Every measurement below is taken to the outside edge of the 2-inch lines, per the official rulebook. The pickleball court is identical for singles and doubles - only the strategy changes. These dimensions are fixed worldwide, so a court built to them in India plays exactly like one anywhere else.

Element Measurement (feet) Metric
Court length (baseline to baseline) 44 ft 13.41 m
Court width (sideline to sideline) 20 ft 6.10 m
Non-volley zone (kitchen), each side of net 7 ft 2.13 m
Service area (each), behind kitchen to baseline 15 ft x 10 ft 4.57 x 3.05 m
Net height at sidelines 36 in 0.914 m
Net height at centre 34 in 0.86 m
Line width 2 in 5.08 cm
Recommended total playing area 30 ft x 60 ft 9.14 x 18.29 m

Pickleball court layout and markings

A pickleball court is divided into a few clearly marked zones. From the net outward on each half: the non-volley zone (kitchen) runs 7 feet back from the net across the full width; behind it, a centreline splits the remaining area into a right and left service court, each 15 feet deep and 10 feet wide, ending at the baseline 22 feet from the net. The sidelines run the full 44-foot length. All lines are 2 inches wide and, ideally, a contrasting colour to the playing surface for clear visibility.

Correct line marking matters as much as the surface. Lines that are the wrong width, faded, or low-contrast cause disputed calls and look unprofessional. On a ChampCourts court the lines are masked and sprayed in a contrasting acrylic colour, or factory-moulded into the PP tile layout, so they stay crisp for years.

Singles vs doubles - same court, different play

Unlike tennis or badminton, pickleball uses the same 20 x 44-foot court for both singles and doubles. There is no narrower singles court and no doubles alley. This is one reason pickleball is so space-efficient and why a single doubles badminton court footprint converts neatly to a pickleball court. In singles the players simply cover more ground; the boundaries do not change.

Pickleball net and equipment specifications

The net is hung across the full 20-foot width, 36 inches high at the sidelines tapering to 34 inches at the centre - the slight dip is intentional and matched to the USA Pickleball equipment standard. Posts sit at or just outside the sidelines, and a centre strap holds the correct 34-inch centre height. Paddles must fit within a combined length-plus-width of 24 inches, and the perforated plastic ball is 2.87-2.97 inches in diameter - all defined in the same rulebook, so a regulation court is matched with regulation equipment.

How much space do you need to build a pickleball court?

The playing court is 20 x 44 feet, but you should plan for a total area of at least 30 x 60 feet so players have safe run-off behind the baselines and beside the sidelines. For multi-court venues, allow extra space between courts. Indoor pickleball courts need a clear ceiling height of 18-20 feet so lobs are not obstructed. Getting the surrounding space right at the planning stage avoids cramped, unsafe play later - it is far cheaper to allocate the run-off now than to move a fence after the surface is laid.

Converting a badminton or tennis court to pickleball

Because a doubles badminton court shares the exact 20 x 44-foot footprint, it is the easiest conversion: re-line for the kitchen and service courts, drop the net to 34 inches at centre, and the court is ready. A tennis court (78 x 36 ft) is large enough to hold one to four pickleball courts depending on orientation and run-off, which is why clubs increasingly re-line under-used tennis courts for pickleball. ChampCourts handles both conversions, keeping the original sport playable where required with blended line colours.

Cost to build a pickleball court in India

Once the dimensions are fixed, surface and site decide the budget. As a 2026 guide, a pickleball court in India runs roughly Rs 4-12 lakh: PP interlocking tiles are the most economical and fastest to lay; a cushioned acrylic court over a new concrete base sits at the upper end. Fencing, floodlights and a tournament net system add to the figure. Per square foot, acrylic surfacing is commonly around Rs 150-260 depending on the cushion build, while PP tiles start lower. For the full surface-by-surface breakdown see our which surface guide.

Building a pickleball court in India - surface and base

The surface decides how the court plays. In India the two most popular pickleball surfaces are cushioned acrylic (a seamless, true-bounce hard court laid over cured concrete) and PP interlocking tiles (modular, fast to fit, with built-in drainage for outdoor courts). Both are laid to the exact 20 x 44-foot dimensions above. View the acrylic pickleball court and PP-tile pickleball court builds. A flat, well-cured concrete base with the correct slope (about 1% for drainage on outdoor courts) is essential before any surface goes down - the base is the part that, done wrong, ruins an otherwise perfect court.

Step-by-step: how a pickleball court is built

A typical ChampCourts pickleball build runs: (1) site survey and marking to the 30 x 60-foot envelope; (2) excavation and a compacted sub-base; (3) a reinforced concrete base, cured and laser-levelled to the drainage slope; (4) the chosen surface - acrylic coats or PP tiles - laid to the 20 x 44-foot court; (5) line marking for the kitchen, service courts and baselines; (6) net posts and net set to 36/34 inches; (7) optional fencing and floodlighting. The sequence matters: rushing the base cure to save days is the most common cause of later cracking.

Indoor vs outdoor pickleball courts

The dimensions are identical indoors and outdoors; the build differs. Outdoor courts use UV-stable acrylic or PP tiles with a slight slope for drainage and wind-aware fencing. Indoor courts can use acrylic or cushioned surfaces, need the 18-20-foot ceiling clearance, and benefit from non-glare lighting of around 300-500 lux tuned to play. Outdoor courts also use a slightly heavier ball, but the court markings and net heights never change.

Maintaining a pickleball court

A well-built court needs little upkeep: sweep grit, rinse the surface, keep drains clear, and recoat an acrylic court every few years to refresh grip and colour. PP-tile courts simply need the odd damaged tile swapped. Keeping the lines crisp and the net at the correct height preserves true, regulation play over the court's life.

Pickleball court dimensions - FAQs

What are the standard pickleball court dimensions?

A standard pickleball court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long (6.10 m x 13.41 m), measured to the outside of the lines. The same court size is used for both singles and doubles play. The total recommended playing area, including out-of-bounds margins, is 30 feet by 60 feet.

How big is the non-volley zone (kitchen)?

The non-volley zone, or 'kitchen', extends 7 feet (2.13 m) from the net on both sides, spanning the full 20-foot width. That makes the kitchen 14 feet across the middle of the court. Players cannot volley the ball while standing in this zone.

What is the height of a pickleball net?

A pickleball net is 36 inches (0.914 m) high at the sidelines and 34 inches (0.86 m) high at the centre. The net spans the full 20-foot width of the court and is held by posts placed at or just outside the sidelines.

How much total space is needed for a pickleball court?

While the court itself is 20 x 44 feet, the recommended total playing area is 30 x 60 feet (9.14 x 18.29 m) to allow safe run-off space around the lines. Indoor courts also need a clear ceiling height of at least 18-20 feet.

Is the pickleball court the same size as a badminton court?

Yes - a pickleball court (20 x 44 ft) is the same size as a doubles badminton court, which is why many venues convert badminton courts for pickleball. The net heights and internal markings differ, however.

How much does it cost to build a pickleball court in India?

A pickleball court in India typically costs between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 12 lakh depending on surface, base condition and add-ons. PP interlocking tiles start lower; cushioned acrylic over a new concrete base sits higher. Fencing, lighting and a net system add to the total.

What surface is best for a pickleball court in India?

Acrylic cushioned surfaces and PP interlocking tiles are the most popular pickleball court surfaces in India - both give true bounce, good grip and all-weather durability over a concrete base. ChampCourts builds pickleball courts in both, to standard dimensions.

Can you convert a badminton or tennis court to pickleball?

Yes. A doubles badminton court is the same 20 x 44-foot footprint, so it converts directly. A tennis court is large enough to fit one to four pickleball courts by re-lining and adding lower nets.
