EPDM Playground Surface Installation
EPDM safety playground surface - overview
ChampCourts manufactures and installs EN 1177-rated EPDM safety playground surfaces for preschools, K-12 schools, hospitals, residential play zones and public parks. Our system is a poured-in-place, seamless, two-layer wet-pour: SBR rubber shock-pad base (10-20 mm) topped with a 10-15 mm EPDM wear layer for colour and abrasion resistance. The result is a fall-attenuating surface that meets HIC < 1000 critical-fall-height ratings, supports wheelchair access, drains rapidly, and resists scooter wheels, sandboxes and the abuse of 200 four-year-olds. Total thickness ranges from 15 mm (1.0 m CFH) to 100 mm (3.0 m CFH). Pricing runs Rs 100-200/sqft based on thickness, EPDM purity and design complexity.
The playground-surface category is where corner-cutting causes the most real-world harm in India. Cement-paved play zones cause hundreds of avoidable preschool head-injuries every year; sand pits become hygiene hazards; engineered wood-chip is hard to source consistently. EPDM wet-pour is the only specification that simultaneously delivers EN 1177 fall-impact safety, wheelchair accessibility, seamless aesthetics, custom design freedom (alphabet grids, animal motifs, hopscotch, mandalas, solar-system layouts) and 8-10 year service life. For premium nurseries chasing Cambridge or IB certification, EPDM is required for compliance with international safety standards. For CBSE schools, NEP 2020 health-and-safety advisories are converging on the same direction. ChampCourts has surfaced 80+ preschools and K-12 campuses with playground EPDM, and the dominant feedback from school principals is "we wish we had done this five years ago."
What sets ChampCourts apart is design depth. Our in-house design team produces CAD layouts with educational motifs - animal recognition for nursery, alphabet hopscotch for LKG, solar-system grids for primary, mandala focal points for meditation zones. Motifs are not stickers or paint; they are inlayed EPDM in distinct colours that last the life of the surface. We have built dinosaur footprint trails, world-map continents, traffic-rules junctions for primary school RTO awareness, and yoga-pose mat outlines for preschool morning routine. Schools that invest the additional Rs 30-80/sqft on design routinely report it as the single highest-impact spend in their campus capex.

Construction and installation process
- CFH audit: ChampCourts inspects existing or proposed play equipment and computes the highest free-fall height per ASTM F1487 / EN 1177; that drives system thickness.
- Sub-base: M20 PCC 100-150 mm with 1:100 fall to drainage. Steel mesh reinforcement around equipment anchors.
- Primer: Two-component PU primer @ 250 g/sqm.
- SBR shock-pad: Mixed and screeded to the design thickness in 1-3 lifts; cured 18-24 hours per lift.
- EPDM wear layer: 10-15 mm EPDM + PU binder, hand-screeded around motifs, trowelled smooth, cured 48 hours.
- Custom motifs: CAD templates cut from MDF, EPDM laid colour-by-colour, joints invisible.
- EN 1177 test: Drop-test report issued with the warranty certificate.

Use cases and target customers
- Preschools and play schools: 800-2,000 sqft zones, typically 25-40 mm thick, with custom alphabet, animal or solar-system motifs. ChampCourts has worked with Kidzee, EuroKids, Footprints, Vibgyor Kids and dozens of independent preschools. Typical timeline is design-to-handover in 25 days.
- K-12 schools: 3,000-6,000 sqft junior and senior zones with separate CFH calculations. Junior (LKG to Grade 2) takes 25 mm; senior (Grade 3-5) takes 40-50 mm; outdoor playground equipment zones step up to 70 mm. Schools often phase the install: junior in summer break, senior in winter break, design-aligned across both.
- Hospitals and rehab centres: Therapy gardens with sensory motifs (paediatric oncology, autism centres). Recent work includes a 1,400 sqft sensory play zone for an autism therapy centre in Hyderabad with high-contrast colour zones and tactile texture variation.
- Residential clubhouses: Builder-spec play areas in premium projects. Default specification for projects priced above Rs 1 cr per unit; landscape architects bake it into the master-plan amenities deck.
- Public parks and municipal projects: SCM and AMRUT-funded tenders, bilingual signage, accessibility ramps and senior-friendly handrails on adjacent paths. Tier-2 and tier-3 city projects increasingly specify EPDM as the new urban-playground default.
- Theme parks and family-entertainment centres: Indoor play zones at Funcity, Snow World, Wonderla-adjacent F&B clusters, malls. EPDM withstands 8+ hours/day high-density foot traffic with marginal wear over 6-8 years.
- Daycare and after-school centres: Compact zones (400-800 sqft) where 25 mm is standard and design themes match the centre brand.
- Senior-care facilities: Memory-care wandering loops with non-slip cushioned surface; calmer earth-tone colour palette.
Design language and motifs
ChampCourts maintains a 200+ motif library covering alphabets (English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi), numbers, animals, planets, vehicles, fruits, sports symbols, yoga poses, traffic signs and storybook characters. We do bespoke design too - schools have given us their logo, mascot or curricular theme and we have inlayed it across the play floor. Recent custom installs include a "world map continents" floor for a global-citizenship school theme, a kabaddi-court layout outlined on an EPDM playground for a sports-focused school, and a chess-board grid for a chess academy attached to a residential project. Custom design adds Rs 30-80/sqft based on colour count and detail.

Frequently asked questions
Is EPDM safe for toddlers chewing on it?
EPDM granules used in playground spec are non-toxic, RoHS-compliant and EN 71-3 tested for heavy-metal migration. They are bound in cured PU so granule release is minimal even under heavy chewing or scooter abrasion.
How is CFH measured?
Per EN 1177, CFH is the highest point a child could realistically fall from on the equipment. We always specify one notch above the calculated CFH for safety margin.
What happens when the surface gets damaged?
EPDM is repairable - damaged patches are cut out in a clean square, fresh EPDM and binder are laid, and the patch blends within 1-2 weeks. ChampCourts provides spare EPDM granules with every project.
Does it fade in the sun?
EPDM granules are coloured through (not surface-coated), so they retain colour for 10+ years. The PU binder uses UV stabilisers to prevent yellowing.
How long before children can play on it?
48 hours after the EPDM wear layer is poured. Full design cure is 7 days. We typically pour during summer/winter school breaks so handover lands a week before reopening.
What is the price difference between purity grades?
20% EPDM (basic) starts at Rs 100/sqft for 25 mm; 100% EPDM (premium) for the same thickness lands at Rs 160-180/sqft. Schools chasing CIE / IB certification typically specify 100% on the wear layer for colour-fastness and child-safety documentation.
Does it warp in summer heat?
No. EPDM-PU stays dimensionally stable up to 80 deg C surface temperature. Asphalt under direct sun in Indian summers regularly hits 60-65 deg C; EPDM stays 8-12 deg C cooler than asphalt because of permeability and lighter colour reflectivity.
How is the design approved before pour?
We submit CAD-rendered design with colour samples, scale-accurate motif sizes and full BOQ for school / committee sign-off. Once approved, we lay a 1 m x 1 m sample patch on site for in-real-life colour verification before bulk pour begins.
How long does the install take from booking?
Standard project: 30 days from booking confirmation to handover. Of this, 5-7 days are design + approval, 7-10 days material lead time, 8-12 days site work, 2 days cure and snag-walk. Larger projects (3,000+ sqft with intricate designs) take 45-60 days.
Can the surface be cleaned with normal mop or pressure washer?
Yes - we recommend power-wash twice a year and damp-mop weekly. For preschools with paint or food spillage, a neutral-pH cleaner removes stains in single pass. Avoid solvents and bleach which slowly degrade the PU binder over 3-5 years.
