Our recommendations are based on governing-body standards and 10+ years of installation experience. No surface is one-size-fits-all — we'd rather lose a sale than build the wrong court.

Overview

A polypropylene (PP) interlocking tile basketball court is the most cost-effective way to build a regulation-feel playing surface for schools, residential societies, gated communities, and recreational facilities across India. ChampCourts supplies and installs FIBA-dimensioned basketball courts on snap-fit modular tiles at Rs 105/sqft onwards — roughly half the cost of an 8-layer acrylic system — without sacrificing safe, predictable ball response. The product is ideal for owners who want a covered or outdoor court up and running in under a week, with the option to relocate or re-tile sections later. (Figures are indicative and vary by area, site condition and specification — request a free itemised estimate.)

PP tiles are manufactured from UV-stabilised virgin polypropylene with a lateral grid that allows water and dust to drain through the surface. The tiles snap together with peg-and-loop connectors, sit on a level concrete or PCC base, and require no adhesives. The result is a multi-colour, low-maintenance court that handles outdoor weather, monsoon drainage, and daily school-period traffic. ChampCourts backs every installation with a 5-year manufacturer warranty and pan-India service.

Cost Breakdown

A 28 m x 15 m FIBA full court covers 420 sqm or approximately 4,520 sqft of playing area. Including the recommended 2 m safety run-off, the total covered area is roughly 5,800 sqft. Use this table to budget realistically:

Component Rate Notes
PP interlocking tiles (supply + install) ₹105–115/sqft onwards Includes line markings
PCC sub-base (optional) Rs 90 per sqft Only if no existing slab
Goal posts (pair) Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,80,000 Wall-mounted or in-ground
Fencing (4 m chain-link) Rs 250 to Rs 400 per running ft Optional
LED floodlights (4 nos, 150 W) Rs 60,000 to Rs 1,20,000 Optional, for evening play

For a typical school project with an existing concrete slab, expect a turnkey cost of Rs 3.2 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh for the playing surface alone. Add lighting and goals and the all-in budget lands between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 7 lakh — significantly lower than the Rs 8 lakh to Rs 11 lakh range for an acrylic court of the same size.

Why PP Tiles for Basketball

Basketball is a high-impact sport with frequent stops, pivots, and lateral cuts. The PP tile surface provides three properties that matter at the recreational and school level:

  • Shock absorption. The lateral grid flexes under load, reducing peak impact on knees and ankles compared with raw concrete.
  • Consistent ball bounce. Although bounce is roughly 5 to 8 per cent softer than acrylic, it is uniform across the court — far better than uneven concrete or patched asphalt.
  • All-weather drainage. The open grid clears rainwater in minutes, so play resumes quickly after a shower. This matters in monsoon-heavy regions like coastal Andhra, Kerala, and the Konkan belt.

Comparison vs Alternatives

Surface Rate (per sqft) Lifespan Best for
PP interlocking tiles ₹105–115 3 to 5 yrs Schools, societies, recreational
8-layer acrylic (from Rs 60 + Rs 90 PCC) Rs 155 7 to 10 yrs Clubs, academies, tournaments
Cushioned acrylic Rs 180 to Rs 220 10+ yrs Premium clubs, low-injury programs
Bare concrete with paint Rs 35 to Rs 50 1 to 2 yrs Avoid — injury and rework risk

Construction Process

  1. Site evaluation. Our team measures available area, checks slope, and confirms drainage outlets.
  2. Sub-base prep. If no slab exists, a PCC sub-base is laid at Rs 90 per sqft with a 1-in-100 cross-slope.
  3. Slab curing. 21-day cure window before tile installation.
  4. Tile layout planning. Court colour scheme and line positions are marked on paper, then chalked on the slab.
  5. Snap-fit installation. Tiles are clicked together starting from one corner; a full court is typically laid in 2 to 3 days.
  6. Line markings. Pre-coloured tiles form FIBA lines automatically; no painting required.
  7. Goal and net installation. Posts are bolted to the slab or pre-cast pockets.
  8. Handover and warranty registration. Customer receives the 5-year certificate and care guide.

Use Cases

  • K-12 schools and CBSE/ICSE campuses
  • Residential societies and gated communities
  • Corporate campuses with employee recreation
  • Recreational coaching centres (not tournament-grade)
  • Outdoor community courts in housing projects

FAQ

Q: Is a PP tile court FIBA-compliant for tournaments?
The dimensions are FIBA-spec, but tile surfaces are not approved for FIBA-sanctioned tournaments. For competitive play, choose our 8-layer acrylic basketball court.

Q: Can PP tiles be installed over my existing concrete?
Yes, as long as the slab is level (within 3 mm in 3 m) and free of major cracks. Most existing slabs need only a thin cement screed correction.

Q: How long does installation take?
A full FIBA court takes 2 to 3 days for tile-laying once the sub-base is cured. End-to-end including civil work: 4 to 6 weeks.

Q: What happens if one tile cracks?
Individual tiles can be popped out and replaced in minutes. We stock replacement tiles in every colour we install.

Q: How does the surface hold up in 45 deg C summers?
UV-stabilised PP withstands Indian summers without warping. Surface temperature is roughly 8 deg C cooler than asphalt under the same sun.

Site Preparation Requirements

Successful PP tile installation depends on getting the sub-base right. The slab must be level within 3 mm over any 3 m straight-edge measurement. Cross-slope should be 1-in-100 for outdoor drainage. The slab should be free of curing-compound residue, oil stains, or efflorescence that prevents the tile-base from sitting flush. For sites with existing concrete more than 5 years old, expect a thin self-levelling screed correction at Rs 25 to Rs 40 per sqft before the tiles can be laid.

Drainage outlets matter even though the tile grid handles surface water — the underlying slab needs a path for that water to exit, otherwise it pools beneath the tiles and accelerates wear. Most installations include a perimeter French drain or surface gutter on the low side. For roof-top installations, slab waterproofing is mandatory before tile-laying; we will inspect existing roof-deck waterproofing during the site survey and flag remediation needs.

Surface Performance Data

Independent biomechanical testing of PP interlocking tiles for basketball play reports the following measured values:

Metric PP tile result Concrete reference
Vertical force reduction 18 to 22 per cent 0 per cent (reference)
Ball rebound height (from 1.8 m drop) 1.20 to 1.30 m 1.32 to 1.38 m
Surface friction (DIN slip resistance) 80 to 95 40 to 60
Surface temperature (45 deg C ambient sun) 52 to 58 deg C 62 to 70 deg C
Water clearance after rain (5 mm) under 5 minutes 30 to 60 minutes

The 18 to 22 per cent force reduction is the most consequential number for school programmes — daily PT periods on PP tiles report markedly lower complaints of shin splints, knee soreness, and lower-back fatigue compared with prior concrete courts.

Maintenance Schedule

Frequency Activity Time required
Daily Sweep loose debris, leaves, dust 10 minutes
Weekly Soft-brush sweep with mild detergent 30 minutes
Monthly Inspect tile snap connections, retighten as needed 20 minutes
Quarterly Power-wash (low-pressure, max 80 bar) 2 hours
Annual Tile audit, replace any cracked tiles 3 to 4 hours

Real Project Reference

A 200-flat residential project in suburban Hyderabad installed a 28 x 15 m FIBA basketball court on PP tiles in February 2026. The court was operational within 4 weeks of order placement (1 week sub-base, 3 weeks cure, 2 days tile installation). Six months in, the society reports 4 to 6 hours of daily use across resident families, school-age coaching batches, and corporate weekend bookings. Annual maintenance cost is under Rs 8,000 — primarily for weekly sweeping consumables and a single quarterly power-wash. Total capex was Rs 4.1 lakh including PCC sub-base, tiles, line markings, and a portable goal pair. Zero tile failures, zero injury complaints.

Additional FAQ

Q: What is the warranty fine print?
Our 5-year warranty covers manufacturing defects in the tiles (cracking, colour fade greater than 25 per cent, connector failure under normal load). Excluded: damage from heavy vehicles driving on the court, vandalism, fire, chemical spills, and use of non-recommended cleaning agents. Replacement tiles are provided free in-warranty; installation labour is charged at standard rates.

Q: What happens if my city has extreme summers (Delhi, Nagpur, Jaipur)?
UV-stabilised virgin PP withstands ambient temperatures up to 60 deg C. We have installations in Jaipur, Delhi, and Nagpur where surface temperatures peak at 55 to 58 deg C in May without dimensional or structural failure. We do recommend morning or evening play during May-June peak.

Q: Can the tiles be relocated if I sell my property?
Yes. PP tiles are not glued — they snap together. A 28 x 15 m court can be lifted, packed, and re-installed at a new location in 3 to 4 days. Most resale customers see 50 to 60 per cent residual value at year 3.

Q: Do I need a separate sports flooring consultant?
Not for PP tile installations. ChampCourts provides turnkey site survey, design, supply, installation, and warranty. We co-ordinate directly with your contractor for the PCC sub-base if needed.

Q: Can the court be used during rain?
Light rain — yes, players continue uninterrupted because water drains through the grid. Heavy rain — playing slows but the surface itself is undamaged. Lightning storms — stop play immediately for safety regardless of surface.
