Football turf in India: 5-a-side and 7-a-side synthetic grass guide
Football turf - 3rd and 4th generation synthetic grass - has transformed urban football in India. A 5-a-side pitch fits on a 5,000-8,000 sqft plot, opens for play within 30-45 days, plays year-round under floodlights, and pays back capital cost in 18-30 months for a city venue. At ChampCourts, we install FIFA-quality synthetic turf for 5-a-side, 7-a-side and 11-a-side pitches with full perimeter fencing, ball-stop nets, LED floodlighting and a 5-year warranty - pan-India.
This guide covers pile heights, infill systems, real turnkey project costs (Rs 12-18L for a 5-a-side, Rs 22-35L for a 7-a-side), revenue maths, and the construction sequence from soil compaction to first kick-off.
Why synthetic turf, not natural grass?
- Plays year-round. Monsoon, summer, winter - synthetic plays without burnout or muddy patches.
- 10x more booking hours. Natural grass collapses under 30+ hours/week of play. Synthetic handles 80+ hours.
- Drains in 30 minutes. Properly graded synthetic pitches play within 30-45 minutes of heavy rain.
- FIFA Quality certification. The same turf used in I-League and ISL training grounds.
- Lower water and pesticide footprint. No daily watering, no fertilizer, no pest treatment.
- Lower long-term cost. Total cost of ownership over 10 years is 50-60% of equivalent natural grass.
- Predictable maintenance. Monthly brushing, annual infill top-up - no greenskeeper required.
Pitch sizes - what fits where
| Format | Playing surface | Total area incl. run-off | Typical plot needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-a-side | 25-30m × 15-20m | 32m × 22m | 5,000-8,000 sqft |
| 7-a-side | 50-60m × 30-40m | 65m × 45m | 16,000-20,000 sqft |
| 9-a-side | 70m × 45m | 78m × 52m | 30,000-35,000 sqft |
| 11-a-side | 100-110m × 64-75m | 115m × 80m | 60,000-80,000 sqft |
Pile height and infill - the engineering choices
Pile height (the grass blade)
- 30-40mm - faster ball roll, hockey-influenced, popular for futsal-mode dual-use pitches
- 40-50mm - the Indian commercial sweet spot, balances ball speed and player feel
- 50-60mm - FIFA Quality Pro spec for 7-a-side and 11-a-side, closest to natural grass feel
- 60-65mm - premium 11-a-side pitches
Infill system
What goes between the grass blades decides how the pitch plays and how long it lasts.
- SBR + silica sand hybrid - the workhorse Indian commercial choice. 12-15kg sand/m² bottom layer for stability + 12-15kg SBR rubber/m² top layer for cushion. Cost-effective, durable.
- SBR only - softer feel, used on indoor pitches. Less dimensional stability outdoors.
- EPDM coloured rubber - cleaner appearance, premium spec, costs 30-50% more than SBR.
- Cork + coconut organic infill - eco-friendly, eliminates microplastic concerns, costs 60-80% more. Niche premium spec.
- Sand-dressed (no rubber) - lowest cost, fastest ball, harder on knees.

Base preparation - the part nobody sees
Most turf failures in India are base failures. The turf itself is fine; the layers beneath it were not engineered. A FIFA Quality base build has four layers:
- Subgrade - existing soil, compacted to 95% MDD, graded 0.5-1% for drainage.
- GSB (granular subbase) - 150-200mm of crushed stone, compacted, plate-load tested.
- WMM (wet mix macadam) - 75-100mm of crushed aggregate, fine-graded, top surface ≤6mm undulation.
- Stone dust binder - 25-30mm, rolled smooth, the bed the turf rolls out on.
For premium specs, add a shock pad (10mm closed-cell PE foam) between binder and turf - this is the FIFA Quality Pro performance layer, adds Rs 30-50/sqft.
Drainage - non-negotiable in monsoon India
- Surface gradient 0.5-1% from centre to perimeter
- Perimeter trench drains, 200-300mm wide
- Connect to municipal storm drain or soak-pit
- Vertical drainage rate ≥150mm/hour through the base
- For poorly draining clay soils: add a sub-surface herringbone drain network
LED floodlights - lighting design
| Pitch | Recreational | League | Tournament |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-a-side | 200 lux, 4 poles, 4×200W | 300 lux, 4×300W | 500 lux, 6×300W |

Turf lifespan and replacement cycle
- Light residential / school use: 10-12 years
- Commercial 12 hr/day: 8-10 years
- High-intensity academy use: 6-8 years
- Replacement cost: Rs 60-90/sqft (turf only, base and infrastructure stays)
The first sign of end-of-life is matting - the fibres lose their upright "spring" and the ball starts to skid. A power-brush refresh extends life by 12-18 months; eventually the turf needs to be re-laid.

FAQ
Is FIFA Quality the same as FIFA Quality Pro?
FIFA Quality is community / club spec. FIFA Quality Pro is professional tournament spec - tighter tolerances on shock absorption, vertical deformation, ball roll, surface friction. Most Indian commercial pitches are FIFA Quality grade; academy pitches go Pro.
Will the turf get hot in summer?
Synthetic turf surface temperature can reach 50-60C in peak summer afternoons. We recommend morning + evening operating hours; some clients install sprinkler systems for evening pre-cooling.
What is the difference between hockey turf and football turf?
Hockey turf is short-pile (12-15mm), heavily water-irrigated, ultra-fast ball. Football turf is long-pile (40-60mm), infill-cushioned, slower ball. They are not interchangeable.
How does the turf attach to the base?
Turf is rolled out across the pitch, seams are joined with seam tape and adhesive, infill weight (~25-30kg/m²) holds it in place. No glue to the base - the turf "floats" on the infill.
What is the warranty?
ChampCourts offers a 5-year written warranty on FIFA-grade turf systems covering pile loss, seam failure and shock pad delamination. Routine infill top-up is operator responsibility.
Do I need permissions / approvals for a commercial venue?
Trade licence + GST registration + fire NOC for indoor venues + signage approvals are typical. Municipal rules vary by city. We help clients with documentation checklists.
How long until I can play on a newly installed pitch?
Same day as final infill is brushed in. Best practice: a 24-hour settling window followed by a final brush pass before commercial bookings begin.
Will the rubber infill smell?
Fresh SBR infill has a mild rubber odour for the first 2-4 weeks. It dissipates with sun exposure. EPDM and cork-based infills are virtually odourless.
Perimeter infrastructure - what goes around the pitch
The turf itself is roughly 35-45% of the project cost. The infrastructure around it is the other 55-65%, and often the difference between a venue that performs and one that struggles.
Perimeter fencing and ball-stop nets
- Galvanised steel pole frame, 4-6m height
- Chain-link or welded-mesh fencing for the lower 2m (containment)
- Polypropylene knotted nets for the upper 2-4m (ball stop)
- Reinforced corner gussets to handle wind loading
- Maintenance access gates, 1.5m wide
- Vehicle gates for maintenance equipment, 3m wide
- Cost: Rs 1500-2500 per running meter installed
Goals and posts
- 5-a-side: 3m × 2m aluminium or steel, anchored or weighted
- 7-a-side: 5m × 2m
- 11-a-side: full 7.32m × 2.44m FIFA spec
- Nylon or polyethylene nets, 4mm gauge
- Cost: Rs 25,000-80,000 per pair depending on size and spec
LED floodlights and electrical
- 4-8 hot-dip galvanised poles, 6-10m height
- LED floodlights with deep-glare reflectors
- Per-pole circuit protection
- Concealed cable trays through the perimeter trench
- Surge protection and earth pit
- Smart controls (timer or app-based) for energy optimisation
- Cost: Rs 4-12L for a 5-a-side, Rs 8-22L for a 7-a-side depending on lux target
Drainage and water management

Common pitfalls and how we avoid them
- Skipping the soil test. Black cotton soil and expansive clay need additional sub-layer treatment. We test before quoting.
- Skimping on the base. A turf pitch with a 100mm base instead of 200mm GSB will develop dips within 18 months. We never compromise base spec.
- Wrong infill mix. Pure SBR is too soft; pure sand is too hard. The hybrid sand-bottom SBR-top spec is correct for Indian conditions.
- Cheap floodlights. Non-LED metal-halide saves capex but doubles electricity bills and dies in 2-3 years. Always insist on LED.
- Insufficient drainage. A pitch that holds water after rain loses 30-40% of monsoon bookings.
- Ignoring acoustic neighbour impact. Whistles and shouting can disturb adjacent residences late evenings - check local noise rules.
Sustainability considerations
Synthetic turf has had a sustainability conversation in Europe around microplastic release from SBR infill. India is starting to see early demand for greener alternatives:
- Cork + coconut organic infills - biodegradable, no microplastic concerns, costs 60-80% more
- Recycled-rubber SBR - similar performance to virgin SBR but lower carbon footprint
- Recyclable polyethylene turf - end-of-life turf can be processed back into raw material
- Solar-powered floodlights - cuts grid power dependency
- Rainwater harvesting at perimeter drains
For LEED / IGBC / GRIHA-aspirant projects, we provide material certificates and recycled-content data on request.
Turf infill choices in depth
The infill system is the single most decision-heavy element of a turf project. Three system architectures to choose between:
Performance-infill system (SBR + silica sand)
The standard Indian commercial system. 12-15 kg/m² silica sand bottom layer for dimensional stability, 12-15 kg/m² SBR rubber top layer for cushion and ball response. Cost-effective, well-understood, durable. Suits 90% of school, society and commercial 5-a-side projects.
Premium-infill system (EPDM coloured rubber)
Same architecture as SBR but using EPDM rubber instead. EPDM is cleaner-looking, available in court colours (green, red, neutral), produces less dust and has a longer effective life (10-12 years vs 8-10). Cost premium 30-50%. Suits academies, premium commercial venues and projects targeting tournament hosting.
Organic-infill system (cork + coconut)
Cork granules + coconut husk fibre instead of rubber. Biodegradable, eliminates microplastic concerns, regulates surface temperature 10-15C cooler than SBR. Cost premium 60-80%. Suits LEED/IGBC-aspirant projects and sustainability-focused brands.
Sand-only system
15-20 kg/m² silica sand, no rubber. Lowest cost, fastest ball, harder on ankles and knees. Suits hockey-style hybrid pitches but not recommended for serious football use.
Infill replenishment cadence
Infill migrates over time - it pushes toward goal mouths, corner kicks and high-traffic central zones. Plan a brushing refresh monthly to redistribute, an infill top-up of 5-8% by mass annually, and a major top-up of 15-20% at year 4-5. Without this discipline, the pile starts to mat down and ball roll becomes inconsistent. Operators who skip annual top-up routinely shorten their effective turf life by 2-3 years.
Why ChampCourts for football turf
Three commitments that define our football turf delivery:
- Base engineering, not just turf laying. We treat the GSB + WMM + binder layers as the project, with turf as the visible finish. Many vendors install turf over poorly engineered bases and disclaim responsibility when dips appear at 18 months. We own the full stack.
- Turf-grade choice flexibility. Imported European, imported Chinese mid-spec or domestic turf - whichever matches your business model. We are not a single-brand reseller.
- Lighting and electrical integration. Pole foundations, conduit routing and surge protection are part of the turnkey scope. We do not hand over a turf pitch with a separate electrical contractor problem to solve.
- Operating support. Booking platform integration advice, infill replenishment scheduling, brushing equipment recommendations - we share what works.
