EPDM Rubber Surfaces
EPDM rubber surfacing — jogging tracks, playgrounds, gym flooring
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a UV-stable, weather-rated rubber granulate surface used for jogging tracks, playgrounds, gym flooring, and outdoor activity zones. ChampCourts installs EPDM surfaces at Rs 80 - 200/sqft across schools, residential societies, parks, fitness centres, and corporate campuses.
Unlike acrylic or PU, EPDM is a granulate poured-in-place system — it has the cushioning of a rubber mat with the durability of a sealed sports surface. It comes in vivid colours (red, blue, green, yellow, terracotta) and can be patterned with logos, age-zones, or running lanes.
EPDM applications & thickness guide

EPDM system construction
- Sub-base: Compacted aggregate or PCC slab, primed with PU primer
- SBR base layer: Black rubber granulate (5-25 mm thick) bonded with single-component PU binder — provides shock absorption
- EPDM top wear layer: 8-15 mm coloured EPDM granulate bonded with aliphatic PU (UV-stable)
- Line marking: Inlay (different colour EPDM) or painted lines for tracks
- Optional sealer: Spike-rated or non-slip top coat for athletic use
Playground safety — CFH ratings
For playground surfaces, EPDM is rated by Critical Fall Height (CFH) per EN 1177:
- 20 mm EPDM: CFH 1.0 m — suitable for low equipment (toddler slides, sand pits)
- 30 mm EPDM: CFH 1.5 m — suitable for standard playground equipment
- 40 mm EPDM: CFH 2.0 m — for tall climbing frames, multi-deck play structures
- 50 mm EPDM: CFH 2.5 m — for high-rise play equipment (rare in India)
We calculate the right thickness based on your tallest play equipment height and provide a CFH compliance certificate.
Jogging track design
For residential societies and schools, we engineer jogging tracks of 1.5 - 2.0 m width with painted directional arrows, distance markers (every 50m or 100m), and optional stretching pads. Typical society track: 250-400 m loop. School / academy track: 200 m or 400 m IAAF-spec.

FAQ
What is the cost of EPDM playground surfacing in India?
Rs 110-200/sqft depending on thickness. A 1,500 sqft society playground at 30 mm thickness costs Rs 2.1-2.8 lakh including base, EPDM granulate, line markings, and a 5-year warranty.
EPDM vs rubber tiles — which is better?
EPDM poured-in-place is seamless (no joints to lift), customisable in colours and patterns, and rated to higher CFH. Rubber tiles are faster to install, removable, and cheaper but have visible joints. For playgrounds we strongly recommend EPDM poured.
How thick should EPDM be for a playground?
Calculate based on equipment height: 20mm for <1m, 30mm for <1.5m, 40mm for <2m, 50mm for <2.5m. We provide CFH compliance certificate.
Can EPDM be installed outdoors?
Yes — EPDM granulate is fully UV-stable (unlike PU). It’s the right choice for outdoor playgrounds, jogging tracks, and rooftop fitness zones.
How long does EPDM installation take?
Small projects (under 2,000 sqft): 5-8 days. Larger jogging tracks: 12-20 days. Athletic tracks: 20-30 days.
What maintenance does EPDM need?
Sweep weekly, jet-wash quarterly. Re-bonding of any lifted edges (rare) at year 4-5. No top-coat re-application needed unless aesthetic refresh.
Gym & weightlifting EPDM specifications
Commercial gyms have specific EPDM demands:
- Free-weight area: 20-25 mm EPDM with high-density SBR underlayer (handles up to 60 kg dumbbell drops, plate drops)
- Cardio zone: 12-15 mm EPDM tile or roll (lower shock absorption needed)
- Functional zone: 15-20 mm EPDM with rubber-tile zones for kettlebell drops
- Olympic platform area: 30 mm EPDM with dedicated lifting platforms inset (or hardwood platform on rubber base)
- Studio (yoga / aerobics): 8-10 mm light EPDM or PU; primary need is flat / level / non-slip
Custom logo inlays (gym brand at entrance, weight-platform markings) are factory-printed into the EPDM at no extra cost for orders > 1,500 sqft.
EPDM maintenance & longevity
- Weekly: Sweep loose debris (sticks, leaves, litter); spot-clean spills with neutral cleaner
- Monthly: Jet-wash (low pressure < 1200 PSI) with mild detergent
- Quarterly: Inspect bonded edges, especially around drains and play-equipment anchors
- Annual: Re-bond any lifted edges (rare under normal use); check for compaction in high-traffic zones
- Year 8-10: Top coat refresh (optional aesthetic refresh)
- Year 12-15: Full EPDM wear layer replacement (sub-base usually still good)
EPDM safety certifications
For playground projects in India, we provide:
- EN 1177 CFH compliance: Critical Fall Height certificate; sample test report from accredited lab
- ASTM F1292 (US equivalent): Available on request for international projects or HOAs requesting US-standard
- Material safety data: EPDM granulate and PU binder MSDS sheets confirming non-toxic, lead-free composition
- Antimicrobial additives: Optional for healthcare / hospital playgrounds
EPDM colour palette & design possibilities
One of EPDM’s biggest advantages over alternative surfaces is its visual versatility. We work with 22 standard colours plus custom-blended granulate for specific brand needs.
- Primary colours: Red, blue, green, yellow, orange — vivid, UV-stable, fade-rated 8-10 years
- Earth tones: Terracotta, sand, charcoal, forest green — for upscale and natural-aesthetic projects
- Pastels: Soft pink, baby blue, mint, lavender — for pre-school playgrounds
- Designer mixes: Two-or-three-colour speckle effects — natural stone, rubber-confetti, gradient transitions
- Inlay graphics: Hopscotch grids, snake-and-ladder, alphabet trails, animal silhouettes, athletic track numbering, brand logos
Athletic track construction — IAAF standard
For schools, colleges, and competitive athletic facilities, we build IAAF-equivalent EPDM tracks at 13 mm system thickness. Key construction parameters:
- Standard 400 m oval: 84.39 m straights, 36.5 m turn radius, 6 or 8 lanes (1.22 m each)
- Sub-base: 75-100 mm asphalt or M25 PCC on compacted aggregate, 1% gradient for drainage
- SBR base layer: 10 mm black SBR granulate bonded with PU
- EPDM wear layer: 3 mm coloured EPDM (typically Roland Garros red, IAAF specification)
- Line marking: Inlay EPDM in white — does not fade or peel
- Drainage: Inner perimeter drain catches runoff; outer drain catches infield runoff
- Lifespan: 8-12 years to first refresh; 15-20 years full lifecycle
EPDM playground equipment compatibility
Our EPDM surfaces are tested for compatibility with major Indian and imported play-equipment brands:
- Wendy Whirl, Kompan, Playplus, Sportmaster — direct mounting on EPDM with through-bolt to sub-floor
- Slides with rubber landing zone — match landing zone CFH to slide height (1.5 m slide = 30 mm EPDM)
- Swing sets — 1.5 m clearance zone in front and behind each swing, EPDM thickness per swing-seat height
- Climbing frames — 40 mm EPDM under structures up to 2 m; 50 mm above
- Trampolines (commercial) — 30-40 mm EPDM around perimeter; trampoline base itself rests on PCC pad
Gym flooring with EPDM — cross-fit and functional zones
For commercial gyms with cross-fit, weightlifting, and functional training zones, we install 15-20 mm EPDM-topped floors that absorb dropped weights (up to 60 kg dumbbell drops without damage) and protect the sub-floor:
- 20 mm sandwich: 12 mm SBR shock layer + 8 mm EPDM wear layer with brand colours / logos
- Lifecycle 12-15 years under heavy commercial use
- Cost: Rs 110-140/sqft installed
- Easy to clean (jet-wash compatible), no joints to lift, custom logo inlay
EPDM vs alternatives — when to choose what
| Surface | Best for | vs EPDM |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber tile (interlocking) | Quick installs, removable | Cheaper but joints lift; not ideal for playgrounds |
| Wet-pour rubber | Generic alternative term | Same family as EPDM; EPDM is the premium spec |
| Mulch / wood chips | Budget playgrounds | Cheaper but blows away, attracts pests, lower CFH consistency |
| Pea gravel | Ultra-budget | Cheapest but harder to maintain, swallowing hazard |
| Artificial turf | Aesthetic playgrounds | Better look; lower CFH; less customisable |
| Acrylic | Sports courts | Acrylic has zero shock absorption; wrong for playgrounds |
Case study — Mumbai residential society playground + jogging track
