EPDM Jogging Track Construction
EPDM rubber jogging track - overview
ChampCourts builds EPDM rubber jogging tracks for schools, gated communities, public parks, corporate campuses and senior-citizen wellness zones across India. Our 13 mm system is a permeable, two-layer poured-in-place surface: an 8-10 mm SBR rubber base for shock absorption, topped with a 3-5 mm coloured EPDM wear layer that resists UV, ozone and the Indian monsoon. The result is a track that drains within minutes of heavy rain, stays cool underfoot in 42 deg C summers, and runs uniformly between Rs 80 and Rs 120 per square foot depending on EPDM granule percentage, colour pattern and lane markings. Compared to PCC, paver-block or asphalt walking paths, EPDM reduces knee-impact stress by 30-40%, eliminates the slippery-when-wet hazard older paver paths develop after three monsoons, and presents a continuous seamless surface free from the trip hazards that plague tiled jogging loops in older Indian societies. For builders and facility managers, EPDM is the lowest-liability surface specification available - which is why every premium project from the Prestige, Brigade, Sobha, Lodha and DLF stables now defaults to it for community jogging amenities.
A standard 200 metre community loop (1.2 to 1.5 metre wide) costs Rs 3 lakh to Rs 8 lakh turnkey. A 400 metre IAAF-style 6-lane oval falls in the Rs 35-65 lakh band. We have delivered tracks for residential layouts in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Indore and Chandigarh, plus 30+ CBSE and IB school campuses. Every project is covered by ChampCourts' standard 5-year structural and surface warranty backed by pan-India service in 50+ cities, meaning a snag in your Mysuru track is handled by the same technical SOP and quality benchmarks as one in our Gurgaon catchment. Most of our tracks have been operating for 5-7 years now with negligible reported issues - the dominant maintenance call is occasional line-paint refresh, not granule loss or binder failure. ChampCourts standardises a single SOP across every site so that quality is independent of geography or installation team rotation.
ChampCourts uses 100% virgin EPDM granules - not recycled-and-recoloured car-tyre rubber, which is the dominant low-cost shortcut in the Indian market. Virgin EPDM holds its colour for 10+ years even under direct sun; recycled granules fade to washed-out grey within 24-30 months and shed visible black dust that stains shoes and shorts. Customers don't always know to ask the question upfront, but they notice the difference within the first summer. We make the granule source visible in every quote so the choice is explicit, not buried in the per-square-foot line.

Rates assume PCC sub-base is already in place. If ChampCourts pours the PCC, add Rs 90/sqft. EPDM purity above 50% adds Rs 15-30/sqft. Lane markings, kerbs, start/finish blocks and floodlighting are quoted separately.
Construction and installation process
- Site survey + design: A ChampCourts engineer visits within 7 working days, captures levels, drainage gradients and obstructions, and returns a CAD layout within 5 days.
- Sub-base preparation: If you have soil ground, we lay 150 mm GSB + 100-150 mm M20 PCC with a 1:100 cross-fall. Existing concrete is checked for cracks and surface profile (CSP 3-4).
- Primer: Single-coat polyurethane primer @ 200 g/sqm seals the concrete and ensures EPDM-to-PCC bonding.
- SBR base layer: 8-10 mm SBR + binder mixed in a forced-action mixer, screeded with a calibrated paver or hand-trowel, cured 18-24 hours.
- EPDM wear layer: 3-5 mm EPDM granule + PU binder, screeded to final thickness, hand-rolled to compact, cured 24-48 hours.
- Line marking: White or contrast PU paint for lanes, kilometre markers, distance call-outs.
- Handover: Track ready for use 72 hours after final layer pour. Maintenance pack and warranty certificate issued.
A 200 m community loop is typically delivered in 7-10 site days; a 400 m school oval takes 18-25 site days subject to weather.
EPDM jogging track vs alternatives
| Surface | Cost / sqft | Shock absorption | Drainage | UV resistance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPDM 13 mm (ChampCourts) | Rs 80-120 | 30-40% | Permeable | 10+ yrs | Schools, societies, parks |
| SBR-only 13 mm | Rs 55-75 | 30-40% | Permeable | 3-4 yrs (fades) | Budget tracks, low-visibility |
| Sandwich PU 13 mm | Rs 250-350 | 35% | Sealed | 10+ yrs | National-level athletics |
| Polyurethane spray 13 mm | Rs 350-500 | 35% | Sealed | 12+ yrs | IAAF Class 1 competition |
| Asphalt / concrete | Rs 40-80 | < 5% | Sealed | 20+ yrs | Not recommended for running |
| Interlocking rubber tiles | Rs 90-150 | 25-30% | Sealed | 5-7 yrs | Indoor jogging zones only |
EPDM hits the sweet spot for community and school use: significantly safer on knees and ankles than asphalt, far more weather-stable than SBR-only, and a third the cost of full PU sandwich systems.
Use cases and target customers
- Gated communities and societies: Builders allocate 800-1,500 metres of perimeter loop on master-plan amenities; EPDM is the default specification for premium projects above Rs 1 cr ticket size. Typical procurement is via the developer's landscape consultant during fit-out phase, with sample patches laid for resident-committee approval before bulk pour.
- Schools and colleges: CBSE and IB schools install 200 m or 400 m ovals as part of NEP 2020 physical-fitness compliance. ChampCourts has delivered tracks for 35+ institutions across Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Pune, Indore, Lucknow and the NCR. School projects often pair the track with EPDM playground surfacing on a single procurement order.
- Municipal parks and smart-city projects: Tender-driven 400-800 m loops with bilingual signage, distance markers, accessibility ramps and senior-friendly handrails. We have executed Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT and JNNURM funded park revitalisations under L1/L2 bidder qualification.
- Corporate campuses: IT parks and pharma campuses use 300-600 m wellness loops for employee programmes. Common spec includes integrated calisthenics stations, lit signage and a parallel hard-surface path for differently-abled access.
- Senior-citizen wellness zones: 1.5 m wide low-impact loops with handrails, rest bays every 30 m, contrast-marked steps and slip-resistant texture. ChampCourts has worked with two large retirement-community developers on standardised wellness-loop kits.
- Hospitals and rehab campuses: Therapy ambulation loops with shock-absorbing surfaces for post-orthopaedic rehab. Mukesh's first hospital track was a 220 m oncology rehab loop in Hyderabad in 2023.
- Stadiums and athletics venues: When the budget cannot stretch to a full IAAF Class 1 sandwich PU oval, our 13 mm EPDM is the right step-up from SBR-only without leaping to Rs 350+/sqft. We supply 4-lane and 6-lane configurations with throws-event D-zones at scale.

Frequently asked questions
How long does an EPDM jogging track last in Indian conditions?
10-12 years with annual maintenance. The EPDM wear layer resists UV and ozone; the SBR base is protected from sunlight by the EPDM. Plan for a top-up wear layer at year 8-10 instead of a full rebuild.
Can it be installed on existing concrete?
Yes - if the PCC is M20+, free of major cracks, and has a 1:100 cross-fall for drainage. We sand-blast or shot-blast to CSP 3-4, prime, and apply directly.
Does the track get hot in summer?
EPDM granules stay 8-12 deg C cooler than asphalt because of permeability and colour reflectivity. Lighter colours (terracotta, green) run cooler than dark blues.
What annual maintenance is required?
Power-wash twice a year, inspect for granule loss in high-wear zones, repaint markings every 2-3 years. ChampCourts offers AMC packages starting at Rs 25,000/year for community loops.
Can we add lane markings later?
Yes. PU lane paint can be applied at any time on the cured EPDM surface. Plan for re-marking every 24-36 months. Inlay markings (where colour is laid as second-pour EPDM rather than painted) last the life of the track but must be planned at install time.
What is the minimum project size you take on?
We have done loops as short as 80 m for boutique pre-schools and projects as large as 8-lane 400 m IAAF certified ovals. There is no minimum; below 1,500 sqft, expect a mobilisation charge of Rs 25,000-40,000 to cover crew travel and equipment freight.
Are EPDM granules safe for skin contact when children fall?
Yes. EPDM is non-toxic, non-leaching, RoHS-compliant and EN 71-3 tested for heavy-metal migration. The PU binder used by ChampCourts is low-VOC and odour-free within 7 days of cure. Many jogging tracks in our portfolio are dual-used by school children for morning PE and toddlers from the residential block in the evening.
How does ChampCourts price compare to local civil contractors?
Local civil contractors often quote Rs 50-65/sqft for what they call "EPDM" tracks. In every case we have audited, the granules are recycled-tyre rubber, the binder is single-coat instead of two-coat, and there is no shock-absorption testing. Within 12-18 months these tracks visibly fade, shed black dust and develop bald patches at high-wear points. Our pricing reflects true virgin EPDM, calibrated binder dosage and standards-grade testing. We publish the spec line by line so customers can compare apples-to-apples instead of being mislead by per-square-foot rate alone.
Can you build a track that supports both jogging and inline skating?
Yes - we have built hybrid tracks for residential projects where evening skating sessions matter. The wear layer is thickened to 5 mm with a higher-purity EPDM blend (60%+) and a smoother trowelled finish. Cost premium is Rs 15-25/sqft over standard.
