Kabaddi Courts
Kabaddi court construction — AKFI & Pro Kabaddi grade
Kabaddi’s explosive growth via Pro Kabaddi League has created unprecedented demand for proper court infrastructure. ChampCourts builds AKFI-spec kabaddi courts in two formats — portable EVA mat systems for schools, gyms, and academies, and permanent poured PU systems for stadia and professional venues.
A regulation AKFI kabaddi court measures 13 m x 10 m (42.6 ft x 32.8 ft) for men, 12 m x 8 m for women. The court is divided into two halves by a centre line, with baulk lines, bonus lines, and end lines marked precisely per AKFI rule book.
Kabaddi surface options

EVA mat system explained
EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) mats are the workhorse of Indian kabaddi — same material family as martial arts tatami. Closed-cell foam with a textured top surface, sold as interlocking 1m x 1m or 2m x 1m tiles.
- 40 mm thickness: AKFI training, school and academy use
- 50 mm thickness: Pro Kabaddi League grade, tournament use
- Density: 60-80 kg/m³ (premium), 40-50 kg/m³ (standard)
- Top finish: Textured for grip; available in colours matching team / sponsor
- Edges: Bevelled / chamfered for safe transition
- Interlocking: Puzzle-cut edges; no adhesive needed; lifts up for storage
Lifecycle: 5-8 years of heavy academy use. Replaceable in 1-2 days if damaged.
Permanent PU kabaddi flooring
For stadia, dedicated academies, and tournament venues, we install 9-10 mm PU systems identical to our basketball / volleyball PU spec — but tuned for kabaddi’s specific impact profile (raider landing forces, frequent kneeling and diving). Pre-applied AKFI line markings in PU resin.
- Shock absorption: 30-40% (joint protection for repeated dives and tackles)
- Vertical deformation: 2-3 mm
- Surface friction: 80-100 BPN
- Cleaning: jet-wash compatible; no dust pickup

FAQ
What is the cost of a kabaddi court in India?
School portable EVA mat: Rs 1.4-2 lakh. Pro Kabaddi grade portable: Rs 2.2-3 lakh. Permanent PU academy: Rs 3.5-5 lakh surface only. Stadium grade: Rs 8-14 lakh per court including branding.
EVA mat vs PU — which should I choose?
EVA mat if you need portability, fast install, or you’re building a multi-use hall that hosts kabaddi seasonally. PU if you have a dedicated kabaddi facility and want stadium / tournament-grade permanent flooring.
What is the AKFI-standard mat thickness?
40 mm for AKFI training and school use. 50 mm for Pro Kabaddi League tournaments and elite academies.
How long does EVA mat installation take?
Half a day — interlocking tiles lay directly on any flat surface (concrete, wood, indoor PVC). No adhesive needed.
Can EVA mats be used outdoors?
Short-term yes, long-term no — UV degrades EVA within 12-18 months. For outdoor kabaddi, consider acrylic surface with painted lines (less impact absorption) or a covered structure with EVA inside.
Do you provide AKFI certification?
We provide material certificates and a dimensional handover report. AKFI venue certification is granted by the federation post-inspection.
Kabaddi for schools — institutional considerations
Schools commissioning kabaddi facilities should consider:
- Multi-use: EVA mats lift up for storage, allowing the hall to host other activities; permanent PU dedicates the space
- Boys + girls separately: AKFI standards differ slightly (court size, baulk line); paint both line systems if both genders train
- Storage planning: EVA mat stack takes ~4 x 3 x 2 m vault; design hall fit-out accordingly
- Periodic inspection: Tiles compress over time; replace individual worn tiles vs full mat replacement (cost-effective)
- Insurance: Higher-impact sport; schools should review their student-athlete liability cover
Kabaddi safety considerations
Kabaddi is a high-impact contact sport with frequent landings, dives, and tackles. Surface choice impacts injury rates significantly:
- 40-50 mm EVA mat: Best impact absorption; recommended for academies and competitive play
- PU 9-10 mm: Good impact absorption + tournament feel; recommended for stadia
- Synthetic mat with foam under (20-30 mm): Acceptable for school PE classes
- Acrylic / hard court: NOT recommended for kabaddi — high injury risk from impact landings
- Natural mud / clay: Traditional but uneven, dust-prone, not recommended for serious training
Pro Kabaddi League impact on kabaddi infrastructure
Since Pro Kabaddi League’s 2014 launch, kabaddi infrastructure demand in India has grown 8-10x. Schools, colleges, and corporate sports facilities now routinely include kabaddi courts in their fit-out plans. State-level academies are commissioning permanent PU-based competition venues.
- School / college: EVA mat portable system, 40 mm thickness, basic AKFI lines. Rs 1.4-2.2 lakh.
- State academy: Permanent PU surface, AKFI competition lines, branded with academy colours. Rs 5-8 lakh per court.
- Professional venue: Stadium-grade PU, Pro Kabaddi League branding, broadcast-ready lighting, spectator seating. Rs 12-20 lakh per court.
- Multi-sport hall with kabaddi overlay: Permanent PU surface with kabaddi line overlay alongside basketball/volleyball/badminton. Rs 4-6 lakh marginal cost for kabaddi addition.
EVA mat specifications & quality grades
| Grade | Thickness | Density (kg/m³) | Use | Cost per court |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| School standard | 40 mm | 40-50 | PE classes, basic training | Rs 1.4-1.8 lakh |
| AKFI training | 40 mm | 60-70 | Academy / club training | Rs 1.8-2.2 lakh |
| Pro Kabaddi grade | 50 mm | 70-80 | Tournament, professional | Rs 2.4-3.2 lakh |
| Premium custom | 50 mm | 80+ | Showcase / branded venues | Rs 3-4.5 lakh |
Line marking & AKFI accuracy
AKFI line specifications are precise — incorrect markings make a court invalid for competitive matches:
- Centre line: 10 cm wide, dividing court in half (perpendicular to long axis)
- Baulk line: 5 cm wide, 3.75 m from centre line (men) / 3 m (women)
- Bonus line: 5 cm wide, 1 m behind baulk line
- End line: 5 cm wide, at the rear edge of each half
- Lobby: 1 m wide on each side of the playing area
- Sitting block (Pro Kabaddi): Painted zones for sat-out players
For EVA mat systems, lines are pre-printed on the mat surface (factory-applied). For permanent PU systems, lines are embedded in the PU resin layer.
Permanent PU kabaddi courts — when to choose
Switch from EVA mat to permanent PU when:
- Court usage exceeds 30+ hours/week (mat compression accelerates)
- You’re building a dedicated kabaddi venue (not a multi-purpose hall)
- Spectator / broadcast events are planned (PU looks more premium on camera)
- Budget allows Rs 5+ lakh per court (vs Rs 2-3 lakh for premium EVA)
- You need 8-10+ year lifecycle without mat replacement
Storage & logistics for EVA mat systems
EVA mats lift up after each session for storage. Practical considerations:
- A 13 m x 10 m court = 130 tiles (1m x 1m) or 65 tiles (2m x 1m). Single tile weight 4-7 kg.
- Storage space: 4 m x 3 m x 2 m high vault (stacked tiles)
- 2 trained staff can lay or remove a court in 35-45 minutes
- Storage on plywood pallets to prevent compression
- Avoid direct UV / heat during storage (degrades EVA over time)
- Carry bag / cart for transport between venues — Rs 12,000-30,000
Case study — Hyderabad school kabaddi training facility
A Hyderabad government-aided school commissioned a kabaddi training facility in 2025 as part of their state-supported sports program. The brief: AKFI-compliant court usable daily for boys and girls training, transportable for inter-school tournaments.
- System: 40 mm AKFI-grade EVA mat (60 kg/m³ density), 1m x 1m interlocking tiles in school colours
- Line marking: Factory-printed AKFI-spec lines
- Accessories: 4 x carrying cases, 2 storage carts, training cones, AKFI rule book reference card
- Lighting: existing hall lighting deemed adequate (~600 lux)
- Total cost: Rs 2.4 lakh including storage and carry equipment
- Outcome: School now hosts district-level inter-school kabaddi tournaments; mat travels to other venues 5-6 times/year
